Intro

Bringing Brown Medicine Off the Page.

Brown Medicine is the magazine for alumni and friends of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Each issue follows students, faculty, and graduates into the world, sharing what alumni go on to achieve after medical school and how they’re changing the practice of medicine and fields well beyond it, while keeping readers connected to the latest news from campus. The school wanted to give the magazine a home online that felt as considered as the printed issue, with room for the photos, audio, and video that print can’t hold.

The site includes articles on alumni success stories, feature articles from its periodical magazine, PDF downloads of past editions, audio stories, videos, and a variety of activities and ways to connect.

Bringing the stories of Brown’s medical alumni to life online—showcasing their work, achievements, and impact beyond graduation through thoughtful editorial design.

The Project Outcome.

Working as part of a small team led by an independent project manager with ties to the Brown alumni community, we designed an editorial homepage that reads like the magazine itself, and the school was thrilled with the result. The current issue’s cover leads the page, with a one-click PDF download. Next to it, a Features slideshow rotates the issue’s lead stories, and a Departments column carries the regular sections: The Beat, Field Notes, and Zoom. Below, Web Extras (Look, Listen, Read, Write) bring in photo galleries, audio and video, the magazine’s Twitter feed, and letters to the editor, while a Medicine@Brown section highlights news from across the school. A Past Issues archive gathers every cover in a clean grid, linking each issue online or as a PDF, and every page was designed to work just as well on an iPad as on a desktop.
